Teaching English Abroad Requirements

On the surface, teaching English abroad requirements are pretty straightforward:

1. Have a bachelor’s degree in any subject

2. Have a TEFL certification (sponsorship is available)

3. Be able to teach English abroad for at least one year

4. Be able to obtain a clear background check

5. Be from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.

But if your goal is to travel the world and experience different cultures, there are lots of options even if you don’t have all the “qualifications”.

Is A College Degree Absolutely Necessary For Teaching English Abroad?

In most cases a college degree will get you a higher paying job in a better school.  And you will certainly have more schools willing to hire you for teaching English abroad

However, every country and every school has different teaching English abroad requirements.  In fact every situation is different… it just depends on what special skills or experience you have to offer, instead of a degree.

in western Europe, the Persian Gulf, and parts of Asia — a college degree is officially (and sometimes unofficially) required to be hired as a teacher.

On the other hand individual schools have the ability to hire whoever they want.  For instance, if you are a star in a particular sport, or if you have many years of business experience, maybe that would be the deciding factor in hiring you for teaching English abroad.

Also, public schools have different hiring practices from private schools.  If you specialize in a particular methodology that they prefer, it could become the factor that gets you in the door.

In The Following Countries You Don’t Need A College Degree To Teach English

You don’t “need” a four-year college degree, but if you have one, it will definitely make a difference when applying for jobs for teaching English abroad.

  • Most of Latin America
  • Eastern Europe
  • Cambodia
  • China
  • Possibly a few other Asian countries

Do You Have To Have a TEFL Certificate If You Want To before Teaching Abroad?

The job you get depends on the qualifications you have vs the teaching English abroad requirements.  A TEFL certificate shows that you have specialized training in teaching English as a foreign language.

If you have many years of experience teaching English, then of course, you won’t need a TEFL certificate.  However, even in this case, TEFL certification will certainly open many doors to higher paying jobs in better schools, in a lot more countries. Its easy to get TEFL certification online.

You can also work as a volunteer without a TEFL certification, but most paid English teaching jobs will want to see a TEFL certificate.

Also, some of the good TEFL certification schools will even help you find a good job in your chosen country.  Since they have connections all over the world they will be able to match your interests and background so there is a better fit with the school.

Is Teaching Experience Absolutely Required Before Teaching Abroad?

Some schools require several years’ experience before they consider you for a job teaching abroad, but there are many who are willing to accept new teachers so they can gain experience.

Most schools are just looking for an English speaker from a native English speaking country.  Thousands of students are able to find jobs in countries all over the world, without any prior experience.

Having a TEFL certificate will give you a definite edge over others if you don’t have English teaching experience.

Some countries that often hire teachers without English teaching experience are:

  • Mexico
  • Turkey
  • Kazakhstan

Do You Have to be a Native English Speaker For Teaching English Abroad?

It is possible to get a good job in a few European countries where non-Europeans are not allowed to teach.

Most Latin American countries will welcome English teachers even if they are not from native English speaking countries.

You can apply to teach English with confidence in the following countries:

Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, French Guiana, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico – in summary, Hispanic America, Brazil, and Haiti.

If you want to teach English abroad but are not a native speaker, you must consider:

  • Your level of fluency
  • Your accent and your ability to communicate in English
  • Your training and experience – It will be a lot easier to find a good job if you have a university degree, TEFL certification, or several years of English teaching experience.
  • Your passport. Citizens of certain countries may have a harder time finding a teaching position due to different visa requirements.

Teaching English abroad requirements may sound straightforward, but there are many exceptions.  If you really want to teach abroad, there is probably a way to make it happen.
